For Amber Townsend, adventure was something found only between the pages of her mother’s books. After all, it’s only 1714; she doesn’t have a lot of freedom. But when her mother’s death forces her to leave her house in Boston, Massachusetts, and journey across the Atlantic to her homeland of England, she discovers adventure in the form of a rag-tag crew of pirates. Captured by the infamous el Tigre, Amber finds herself heading on a different course from the one she set out on. Captain Logan Jeffries has always prided himself on his professionalism, so when his fiery prisoner refuses to play nice, he has no clue how to deal with her. What do you do with a woman who is unafraid to fight back? And how long can you guard a terrible secret? After a few misadventures in Tortuga, they set sail for England, Amber more determined than ever to prove that she doesn’t need a man to protect her. As she gains allies on the ship and trains in the art of sword fighting and piracy, she must fight off the attraction she feels for Logan. But in the almost claustrophobic confines of the ship, there’s nowhere to run from her desire. Passion’s Tide follows these two characters as they engage in a power struggle across the ocean. Amber is an unconventional heroine in that she refuses to play the part of a fragile female, and Logan is hiding secrets about his true identity. Together, they embark on a magnificent adventure full of subterfuge and betrayal, until they find themselves at a difficult crossroads with a decision to make. Non-stop action and a dry sense of humor, along with a colorful cast of pirates makes Passion’s Tide impossible to put down.

A little predictable in where it was going but the core was there with interesting characters both primary and secondary. There was a lot needed to make it more cohesive such as making things more believable like the kid that gets his leg amputated and is up and running like it's no big deal and how certain things were a little too easy for the heroine and she had moments of epic stupidity that didn't match how intellectual she was, not to mention how the so called "villain" towards the end had 5 minutes of "screen time" and was defeated off screen so there is no real sense of victory and the heroine still had to be save by the man. To that effect, there was a lot of focus on how different and smart she was so you expect a lot of strength which is delivered but not according to hype. It was still a nice change of having a heroine dominated by the hero and being and believing she has to toe the line. What was annoying was at the end she does end up toeing the line so it almost invalidates her journey through the seas and seemed like it never needed to happen. Ultimately it was interesting and enjoyable to a point but the conclusion at the end really drove home how much the intelligence of heroine was hyped up so much that the book became a contrived simple HEA factory when really there was a lot of points of feminine strength and the strength of an actual relationship, while was based on a lot of chemistry still had depth. Some finer details did need more rounding out but overall it was a decent read.Product details

The heroin finds a will upon her mothers death forcing her to return to England to find a titled husband. The hero, a pirate, captures her ship and the heroin with it.
What follows is the development of these two character together, sometimes funny and often fraught with sexual tension. The interaction of all the other crew members is well done. At one point I started to question why the heroin was so blase about planning to take over another pirates ship and possible commit murder but the writer suggests things (I won't spoil it) enough to keep you guessing and so I gave the hero and heroin the benefit of the doubt. Once back in England the conclusion was fast but I still felt a connection with the new secondary characters, introduced at this point. This only goes to show the authors fantastic writing skills.
I could not put this book down. The story line has been done before but I feel this author delved into the period and technical accuracy fluently without boring me, the sailing terminology and speech was interesting without being forced.
The main thing I would say is, there were no lulls. Each step of the way the story progressed with relevancy and character depth. There were no undue internal reflections, as is the norm these days, in order to bulk out romance novellas to novels.
I don't usually read the blurb at the end about the author but I did for this one and all I ask is, that she doesn't take another 5 years to write her next novel, as I definitely want to read more of her work.
This book was really good! I loved all the characters and the Witty banter between them...I loved how they always fought back and forth, but with humor ..they also had great chemistry and great passion...the love scene's were good..this book was set in the 1800s , the writing seems a little modern but by no means did this take away from the story ...that usually is a pet peeve of mine, if it's historical than it should be accurate ...but this story was so good that i really didn't even realize that it was missing it's historical language ..she did an excellent job on sucking me in on the storyline that I didn't even miss it or it didn't take away from the book....
Sarah West does have talent for writing. One of the most important things to master when telling a story is making your characters matter to your audience and Sarah has that talent down pat. However, she should keep her settings strictly in the Contemporary Romances genre because she knows absolutely nothing about the cultural mores or even voice patterns of historical periods. As for putting a lady of 23, brought up in America, daughter of a Baron, traveling alone to England to marry a peer of at least as high rank as her father, to escape her uncle in order to claim her inheritance, captured by a pirate, becomes a pirate herself in two months including becoming an expert swordswoman, has the Captain washing his own clothes, has everyone calling her by her first name (which wouldn't have happened in the 1940's, let alone the 1700's!!!) right after she meets them, she would not be able to get dressed or do her hair by herself, females could not inherit property or titles, only receive income, protocol for London society ladies was extremely rigid and Amber would have never been accepted into the tun and certainly wouldn't have known the proper way to behave to attract a husband during a London Season (which she wouldn't have gotten since she was already ruined by her being with the pirate captain without a chaperon, etc. Well, I'm sure you get the idea, and this is only from the first third of the book off the top of my head. However, the biggest thing that turned me off was Amber's 21st century mindset and the Captain's willingness to accept her as an equal which is something few modern macho men are capable of doing or even willing to try!!! I went from being amused by the constant mistakes, to being totally turned off so that I simply had to stop reading, by the total lack of knowledge and Sarah's lack of research into the lifestyle of the era she chose to write about!! I would definitely not recommend this book but if you don't care about factual accuracy and just want a fun way to pass the time, then take a chance on this one because Sarah does have talent. I just wish she didn't try to write about any time but the present day!
